Building Bayelsa

More than half of Nigeria’s oil comes from the southern state of Bayelsa. The country produces $180 million in oil revenue each day, but the majority of its people lives on just $1 a day. Frustration has led to militancy and insecurity. The newly elected governor of Bayelsa, Timipre Sylva, is working to radically transform the region with transparent governance and sustainable development projects.

Building Bayelsa highlights the state’s efforts to end corruption and improve the social, political, and economic institutions for its citizens. Using oil revenue to invest in education, health care, and infrastructure, the government intends to create more local jobs and improve the quality of life for all Bayelsans. Governor Silva envisions a “unified, secure, and more prosperous Bayelsa” - a model of hope and progress for the entire country.
